Driver CPC Training
What is Driver CPC?
The Driver CPC is a "certificate of professional competence". It is a mandatory qualification for professional lorry drivers.
There are two types of Driver CPC, which is "initial CPC" and "Periodic training".
Initial CPC
If you passed your HGV test after September 2009 and didn't already have C1 on your licence, you will need to complete modules 2 and 4 to drive professionally. These are in addition to the normal theory and practical tests.
Module 2 is a theory test. It is made up of 7 case studies that you work through on a computer. The case studies are short stories, based on situations that you’re likely to come across in your working life.
Module 4 is a practical, safety demonstration test. It lasts about 30 minutes and focuses on vehicle safety and security.
The subjects covered are:
- Ability to load vehicle safely and correctly
- Security of the vehicle and its contents
- Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking
- Ability to assess emergency situations
- Ability to prevent physical risk
- You can't sit module 4 until you have passed module 2
Once you have completed your initial CPC you have 5 years to complete 35 hours of periodic training.

Periodic Training
This is ongoing training for existing drivers. Professional drivers need to complete 35 hours of training with an approved training provider every 5 years. There is no pass or fail for this.

Once you have completed either the Initial CPC, or 35 hours of Periodic Training, you will receive your driver qualification card (DQC).
