What is driver CPC?

If you passed your HGV test after September 2009 and didn’t already have C1 on your licence, you will need to complete modules 2 and 4 to drive professionally. These are in addition to the normal theory and practical tests.

There are two types of Driver CPC, which is “Initial CPC” and “Periodic CPC”.

Module 4 Initial Driver CPC

If you passed your HGV test after September 2009 and didn't already have C1 on your licence, you will need to complete modules2 and 4 to drive professionally. These are in addition to the normal theory and practical tests.

The subjects covered are:

Drivers Hours & Tachographs
Licence Weights, Dimensions & Eco Driving
Vehicle Checks, Defects & Security
Vulnerable Road Users 1 + 2
Health + Safety & Tiredness, Diet, Lifestyle
Company + Public Image & DCPC First Aid
Fire Marshall & Emergency Aid

Module 2

Module 2 is a theory test. It is made up of 7 case studies that you work through on a computer. The case studies are short stories, based on situations that you’re likely to come across in your working life.

Module 4

Module 4 is a practical, safety demonstration test. It lasts about 30 minutes and focuses on vehicle safety and security.

You can’t sit module 4 until you have passed module 2.
Once you have completed your initial CPC you have 5 years to complete 35 hours of periodic training.

Module 4 Initial Driver CPC

This is ongoing training for existing drivers. Professional drivers need to complete 35 hours of training with an approved training provider every 5 years. There is no pass or fail for this.

Once you have completed either the Initial CPC, or 35 hours of Periodic Training, you will receive your driver qualification card (DQC).
